TOKYO TALK

DASHA ASHLEY / STUDENT
HMV' my favorite music store because there's lots of choice and it's cheap. The last record I bought was Daft Punk's album Discovery, which was easy to find since it's a popular new release. I don't think Tokyo music stores offer enough variety in terms of clubbing music, and what's on offer is occasionally overpriced, especially in terms of imports.
MAKO SUGO / DJ
I shop for my records at Manhattan because they stock the latest releases, and the shop assistants are very helpful. Outkast, by MS Jackson, was the last record I bought, mainly because I heard a DJ at a club spinning it and really liked the sound. Some Tokyo stores, such as Manhattan, offer enough variety, but it gets expensive when you're a DJ who has to buy lots of albums. So I'm always broke.

TETSUYA / STUDENT
I like Dance Music Records because they carry a lot of abstract music. The last record I bought was Capsule by Space Kelly. There's plenty of music to choose from in Tokyo, and I think the prices are just right.

Want to buy a CD but aren't sure where to get it? Bemused by the multitude of music stores spread dissonantly throughout the city? TC's tuned in and turned on reporter hit the streets to find the latest sounds. What's your favorite music store and what was the last record you bought? Was it difficult to find? Also, do Tokyo record stores offer enough variety, and do you agree that music in Tokyo is overpriced?

MATT / TEACHER
I like shopping for music at HMV because it has the best vibe and the listening stations always work. The last music I purchased was Parachutes by Cold Play. Tokyo has a great variety of music, but it's too expensive-I think JY1400 would be more reasonable for a CD.

TORU WATANABE / JOURNALIST
After checking out record stores in London and New York, I think Tokyo's Dance Music Records, by comparison, has the best selection. Terry Callion's album Alive was the last record I purchased and, since it's fairly obscure, it wasn't easy to find. While Tokyo offers good variety, music is definitely overpriced.
