RANT 'N' RAVE
Revenge of the nerds!
OK, I've had just about enough. It seems
that nary a day goes by that I don't hear it from some foreigner about how all these
gaijin geeks pick up stunning Japanese girls and what's up with that? Look, just because
back home (wherever that happens to be) we have some sort of crazed fashion/beauty myth
that says that some people are more worthy of love than others doesn't mean that it should
apply here. What I find particularly striking is that most of the people who advance what
a friend of mine calls the 2 to 10 theory (guys who are a 2 over there are a 10 over here)
are women. You would think that a gender that has spent the last 400 or more years being
told how to look by a phallocratic media culture would be pleased to see that some of its
newer victims have found a place where they can find a mate without the most stylish
clothes or Brad Pitt looks.
The very concept of someone being a 2 or a 10 should be revolting, and yet with a hint of
unfairness in their voice, gaijin women decry the fact that these so-called losers are
scoring all the babes. Hey, wake up and get off it. Maybe those two people who you see
holding hands on the Yamanote train love each other, maybe some Japanese women haven't
bought into the male beauty myth that has already infected our society in the West. Maybe
their beauty myth doesn't extend to foreign men. If these women have managed to avoid
this, then way to go. It has gotten to the point that I feel bad when walking around with
a Japanese woman, as I know that all the gaijin I see will be tut-tutting. What kind of
weird racist, beauty-obsessed crap is that?
Personally, I think that this is all just sour grapes. Envy. Why can't the gaijin women
get over this? Maybe because they feel left out. I don't know, and perhaps I am being a
bit unfair. Not everyone feels this way, but there are enough out there that this had to
be said. Let's try to embrace this opportunity and force ourselves beyond our
preconceptions. Maybe we can look at those two kids on the train and say "good for
them, they've found each other." Even if the guy is wearing the wrong socks, and a
cheap suit. I hope so. Good luck to the geeks, and more power to them. If they can find
women who are capable of seeing beyond their clothes and looks then ganbatte I
say.
Many thanks to Mike Ross for this Rant.
