Old Hat
Aspiring entrepreneurs should take heart from the story of David Saxby, who successfully
transported his London vintage store, Old Hat, into the heart of
Harajuku. Bespoke suits, shoes, vintage accessories and tweeds from the finest London
outfitters are crammed into this tiny store. There are two rails of '60s dresses and macs
and a wide selection of Panamas and flat caps. Anyone wishing to play the English
gentleman should look no further, just keep an eye out for the Union flag draped outside.
Open 11am-8pm. 6-34-14 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku. Tel: 03-3498-2956. Nearest station:
Meiji Jingumae.
American Rag CIE
Customization and retro are proving to be persistent trends on both catwalks and the
street. American Rag CIE is among the finest of a new breed of store
catering to this demand by stocking contemporary design wear alongside vintage and vintage
remakes. It sources hard-to-find labels from London (Blaak, Maria Chen, Purple Om,
Maharishi, Eley Kishimoto) and New York (Sandy Dalal, Yel be Chei), shoes from Italy
(Premiata) and its vintage wear from the US and Continental Europe. Besides clothes you
can find imported table/homeware, watches, jewelry and accessories.
Open 11am-8pm. 1-5-4 Jinan, Shibuya-ku. Tel: 03-5459-7300. Nearest station:
Shibuya, behind Marui One.
Apache
For those who consider their bike an accessory as much as a means of transport, Apache
should be a regular port of call. Patronized by hair stylists and shop staff from
surrounding Harajuku, the store is a virtual fashion parade of Tokyo street style. Apache
has established a solid reputation for thorough after-sales service and also stocks top
quality parts and names like Bianci and Giant. The unassuming staff can give you great
advice on some of the toughest bikes on the street.
Open 12am-8pm. Pino Bldg 2F, 4-28-8 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku. Tel: 03-3404-4700.
Nearest station: Meiji Jingumae. |
