As part of Octobers ongoing
Swedish Style in Tokyo contemporary culture extravaganza, the vast club Code in Shinjuku
will see Swedens sexiest singer and leading techno DJ headline an event featuring
the countrys latest music and fashion.
A winner of the prestigious (and to some notorious) Eurovision Song Contest in 1999,
26-year-old Charlotte Nilsson is the latest in Swedens venerable export line of
busty beauties. Also chosen Babe of 1999 by CafEmagazine, Nilsson released
her first album, Charlotte, the same year. The album charted all over Europe, leading to
the release of her second album, Miss Jealousy, this March. Paul Rein, the songwriter
behind mega-hits for Jessica Simpson and Christina Aguilera, produced the album.
Providing harder-edged sounds will be DJ Adam Beyer, whose series of Drumcodes albums have
set a benchmark for percussive, driving techno. A sometimes visitor to Japan, Beyer is
also behind the influential Code-Red record label. For those who want to experience Beyer
in a more intimate setting, he will also be behind the decks at Maniac Love the following
night, October 20.
Meanwhile, those who want to experience a more alternative side of Swedish electronica
should head over to Milk in Ebisu on Saturday, October 13, where emerging experimental
techno units Mitek and Pluxus will be heading up an evening of musical interaction with
Japanese artists in the event Swedish Club Night@Milk
Over in the trance world, two upcoming CD release parties look to provide a perspective on
the latest sounds in psychedelic techno. This Saturday, Tokyo-based Dakini records will be
presenting its latest release, Sky Dancing, in the event Dakini Nights, Vol. 6. The party
at Club Cay in Aoyama will feature a live set of acoustic middle-eastern trance
music by Sky Dancing artist Sevda, a live percussion set from Tokyos venerable
Ochi Brothers, a deep marathon DJ set from Dakini honcho Makyo, as well as
ambient-oriental belly-dance from dancer Mishaal.
Next Saturday, meanwhile, Trance Progression will be celebrating the release of its first,
self-named mix CD (see CD reviews) with a big bash at Yokohama Bay Hall. Kicking off last
year, the party has quickly established itself as one of the leading quality trance events
around town. Scheduled for the upcoming event are live UK acts Shakta and Mindfield, with
DJs John Ford (UK), Dimitris (Greece) and The Papuna (Israel), among others, representing
the international face of trance.
