Yoji Biomehanika: Matching
hairstyle and sound
Cutting Edge |
Japan' most colorful DJ is
on the warpath celebrating the release of his new album, Technicolor NRG Show. Yoji
Biomehanika's tour wraps up with an after-hours set on Apr 8 at Velfarre in
Roppongi.
With his Technicolor shock of hair and pedal-to-the-metal DJ style, Biomehanika has been
raising the adrenaline level over the past few years with residencies at Tokyo's Viva
and Osaka's Ultra Pumpin' parties.
The new CD - released in Japan on the Cutting Edge imprint and overseas on England's
Hellhouse label - is a compendium of some of Biomehanika's favorite tracks, mixed as he
might during a set at one of his parties. With songs by hard-hitters Do The Nasty, Crash
Boom Bang and many other leaders, the CD captures Biomehanika's formidable, high-BPM,
trance-on-steroids take on the Nu NRG style.
After touring Canada and Holland, Mehanika returns to Japan for a brief break before
heading off to key clubs of London, Fridge and Cloud 9.

Jeff Mills:
Detroit innovator
Universe |
Meanwhile, Detroit techno
freaks will be psyched to hear that Jeff Mills - master of the lean, industrial
Detroit sound - will be returning to Japan after a long absence. Mills will man the decks
this Tue at Luners in Azabujuban for one of his marathon sets, with backing from
Japanese minimal techno specialist Fumiya Tanaka (Torema Records).
A founding member of seminal Detroit label Underground Resistance in the late '80s, early
Mills tracks such as "Waveform" captured his fusion of hardcore acid with the
stripped-down Detroit esthetic.
In 1992, Mills relocated to New York where a residency at the famed Limelight and a new
contract with respected German label Tresor brought him to a worldwide audience.
More recently, Mills has been releasing albums with Sony Japan and England's React, with
whom he issued Live At Liquid Room, Tokyo, in 1996.
His latest project is an unusual new score for the 1926 cinematic masterpiece Metropolis
by German director Fritz Lang.
