The Word Is SEX

Team Amadera

"This is intended for people in their late twenties and older," cautions Team Amadera, the performance group behind the upcoming spectacle The Word Is SEX. OK, you' got my attention now, but what exactly is it anyways?

"The main performance is a genuine song and dance show that reminds you of Las Vegas," explains Amadera. "It's a really sexy performance show for adults."

Formed in early 1999, Amadera is a group of professional Japanese singers, actors and dancers who offer "a new form of entertainment" about one theme and one theme only - sex.

The show grew out of the experiences of Amadera leader Satomi. "Lately a lot of sexy shows are imported from overseas and performed at topless bars or male striptease joints. But the skills and techniques of the dancers are not very good," she says. "How I can express sex as sexy and cool as possible on stage without showing one's genitals is my personal goal. I want to create the ultimate sexy entertainment created and performed by Japanese."

With this perhaps unusual ambition, Satomi - a veteran of musicals such as the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Rent-formed a team of like-minded professionals, dubbing themselves Team Amadera. "Assembling the best singers and dancers, I want to express love and sex, which any human being is interested in and experiences, as coolly as possible," she says.

What The Word Is SEX will actually consist of, it seems, is stage routines set to contemporary black and Latin sounds. Numbers will include a "Latin Medley" with three female dancers; D'Angelo's "Untitled" featuring a male dancer but which "men also can enjoy"; a "Pole Dance" in which, says Amadera, "We show you the many skills in using the pole"; "Japanese Hip Hop" composed with Japanese instruments in which male dancers will dance with kimonos; and even a "Private Dance" in which one lucky customer will be invited up on stage for a private lesson.

Does that make things any clearer? Well, if not, you'll just have to show up and check out The Word Is SEX for yourself.
