WORK IN JAPAN

Opportunity on the block

When opportunity knocks these days, more often than not it's the hand of the online corporate community. Expanding at exponential rates, with the virtual version of every kind of business imaginable, the Internet offers job possibilities for just about everyone. Similan.com is a maverick company testing the uncharted waters of e-commerce in Asia with online auction sites. They're striving to build a viable business and a fun working environment and are currently looking for lively, creative people to get their Japan website off the ground. Georgia Jacobs stalks to Chief Operating Officer Debbie Jacobson.

Tell us a bit about Similan.com
Similan.com is a dynamic company expanding throughout Asia in the online auction and classifieds e-commerce sector. Through its websites, www.surfingbananas.com  and www.surfingbiz.com , it aims to be the leader in the C to C, B to C and B to B online space in Asia. The company currently has operations in Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and Korea, and will shortly launch its Japan website. Fostering a fun and creative atmosphere throughout the company is an important part of what we do, and we're excited to have like-minded people join our team.

What do you auction off at your two sites?
SurfingBananas.com is our Business to Consumer (B to C) and Consumer to Consumer (C to C) auction website where members can buy and sell either in their own countries or to surfers around the region while SurfingBiz.com offers growing businesses a platform for auctions, distribution and listings. For SurfingBananas.com, the website offers surfers a comprehensive range of more than 25,000 different products in more than 100 categories from all over Asia. At SurfingBiz.com, the emphasis is on products and services that would interest businesses.

What kind of people are best suited for an Internet company?
People who are excited about the industry and have a passion for the Internet. It's not necessary to be a technical type of person, but willingness to learn, a creative mind, and enthusiasm are the best assets to have.

What positions are you seeking to fill?
We are looking to fill marketing, customer service, administration and buyer positions. Ideally, we would like people who are comfortable communicating in both Japanese and English.

Describe how Internet work is different from print or broadcast media.
The Internet industry works at a much faster pace than the print or broadcast media. From initial discussions to actual execution of an online promotion, the average time taken could be as fast as half a day!

How do you expect the company to expand in the future?
We anticipate becoming the brand name of choice in Asia for anyone looking for an online auction/classifieds website where they can buy and sell products. We also have access to European markets through our partner in Europe, and we'll announce additional partnerships in other regions in the near future.

To apply for any position go to www.similan.com , fax 65-849-5201 or write to The Cool Jobs Manager, Similan.com, 77 Kim Yam Road, Singapore 239372
