From the
heart
Y'
Table Corporation, the brains behind restaurants like Salvatore Cuomo
Brothers, is looking for driven personnel to help expand their growing
business. Maki Nibayashi talks to Mutsuo Funabiki of the Management Planning
Division about open positions.
Please tell us a bit about your company.
Our
main business is managing restaurants and membership clubs. We started as a
small cafe in Takadanobaba about 30 years ago. In 1989, we opened Club XEX,
which is a membership-only club with over 3000 members. We didn't want it to
be just like any other club; we wanted something different. So we
incorporated an Italian and Japanese restaurant inside. Then the company
shifted fully into the restaurant business. Last year we opened Salvatore
Cuomo Brothers in Aoyama. This year we opened XEX Daikanyama in the La
Fuente building and XEX Atago Green Hills. We’ve been extremely busy with
the new openings and have expanded rapidly. But our main goal now is to go
public with our shares while expanding our restaurant business. We are not
only growing our restaurant business but intend to create a restaurant space
or complex where customers are free to move around—to get away from the
stereotypical dining experience. We want to create an atmosphere in which it
would be okay to have sushi at a bar.
What kind of people are you seeking to hire?
We
are hiring both foreign and Japanese staff who really "have
heart." This is our
president's
belief. What we are trying to do is get away from your stereotypical Italian
or Japanese meal. We are always trying to break the norm of how people think
they should dine or eat. So we need people who are sensitive, can think on
their own, can put themselves in the customersEshoes and think outside
the box. In order to do this you really have to have "heart," as
our president says, meaning you really have to have feeling and believe in
what you are doing.
We are
seeking to hire basically all positions, but we believe that it is very
important to hire good managers because good managers make for good staff.
For example, we need bar managers, general managers, people who can stand at
the top and make a difference to our restaurant section. Of course we also
need people to work under these managers. Right now, we really need to hire
bar staff and Italian or foreign wait staff who can speak Japanese. Also, we
are looking for both full- and part-time staff.
Can you tell us about salary, benefits, etc.?
For
part-timers, our hourly wage starts at ¥1500 but if you are really, really
good and if you are someone that we need and have been looking for, we can
pay up to ¥3000 an hour. Again, it all depends on how hard you want to work
and how badly you want to make it. For full-time staff, our minimum monthly
salary is ¥200,000, but again, this is negotiable. Also, our salary is
based on an annual set contract fee. We do not pay overtime and there are no
bonuses. What’s different about us is that we really reward those who work
hard, so we have a salary assessment four times a year. We like to reward
those who are doing well right away.
