Training for professionalism

Managing Director Glyndwr R. Meredith
Maki Nibayashi

I.T.S. Training Systems Ltd coaches corporate employees on the ins and outs of cross-cultural communication. Maki Nibayashi speaks to Managing Director Glyndwr R. Meredith about what it takes to become a program director.

Please tell us a bit about your company.
We are a corporate training company. We specialize in teaching English and Japanese, along with cross-cultural awareness and international business communication skills. We were incorporated in June ' with the clear objective of becoming the best training company of our type in Tokyo. We have two directors and employ ten staff at this point.

The majority of our clients are Japanese subsidiaries of foreign companies. We see our clients as partners working toward the same goal-effectively trained employees. Because of this partnership, we are able to make sure that the training needs are clearly identified and trainees do not attend training unless suitably motivated. With this as a base, we build close, team-based relationships between trainers and trainees, all working toward the same goals. Every one of our courses is customized (we never teach anything off the shelf) while being based on consistent core principles. We constantly evaluate and improve our programs in order to make them more effective, attractive and satisfying. Our trainers always look for opportunities to meet their trainees' individual needs by creating activities that reflect their personal circumstances at work.

I have been in English language training for more than 20 years and have spent the last 14 of those in Japan. I know what makes an attractive work environment and understand what support and assistance a good training team needs. My aim is to continue to build a highly professional and well-supported team of enthusiastic corporate trainers.

The second arm of our business provides Japanese language training to foreign managers and staff working in Japan. This is a natural extension of our relationship with our clients. Their foreign staff also needs training, so it's natural that they will turn to an organization they like and trust.

Where do you see your company going in Japan in the future?
Our goal is to provide excellent training. We will be the best training organization of our type in Tokyo, not least because of our unique approach to needs analysis, training organization and training management. We have been able to guarantee high attendance rates, excellent participation in our Internet-based self-study programs, and employees who can immediately use their new skills. This in turn ensures job satisfaction for our trainers. We expect a high level of personal commitment and personnel management from our trainers. This has to be reflected in the leadership, experience, skill and commitment of the program director. Taking these factors together, we have only to build on them to ensure a successful future.

What kind of people are you seeking to hire?
We are looking for a program director. This job requires experience, skill and vision in organizing and managing corporate training classes. This person will have strong leadership skills and the character to see a project through from outset to conclusion. We will consider someone with the potential to grow into the position. We are also looking for experienced, qualified, professional full- and part-time corporate trainers.

Can you tell us a bit about the benefits, salaries, etc.?
We are offering JY5 million a year, eight weeks vacation, private healthcare and a bonus to the program director. This is an ideal position for someone with a commitment to working in Japan who wishes to grow with an expanding company. For the full- and part-time positions, remuneration depends on experience and ability. We give top remuneration to top people.
