Director of Japan Energy Development Co., Osamu Koyama

Japan Energy Development Co. Ltd., which oversees petroleum activities in the region, is looking for a native English-speaking editor/rewriter. Maki Nibayashi talks to Anabelle Jiang and Mr Kamobayashi about opportunities at Japan Energy Development Co.

Please tell us a bit about your company
Japan Energy Development Co. Ltd (JED) is a division of the Japan Energy Corporation (JEC),and was established in 1982 to take charge of JEC' domestic and overseas upstream petroleum activities such as exploration, development and production. Two of JEC's more well-known subsidiary companies are AM/PM convenience stores, and more closely related to JED are the JOMO gas stations. JED's head office is located in Akasaka, Tokyo. However, we have offices all over the world, from Abu Dhabi to Shenzhen. Our Tokyo office handles our business in Australia and Papua New Guinea, as we do not have offices on site. Domestic business is handled at our Nakajo field office in Niigata Prefecture.

What kind of people are you looking to hire?
Because the Tokyo office deals with our overseas operations, we are looking for a liaison who will represent us as a Japanese company but with understanding of other business culture. We have one native English speaker on our staff who can deal with almost everything that goes through the office in English. They also provide outgoing documentation in flawless English, from reports going to foreign government agencies to technical papers to be submitted by our engineers in journals, and even documents as small as a confidential letter. Therefore, the candidate must be somewhat of a chameleon, more of an English expert able to deal with the simplest to the most technical task. We are looking for someone to edit, re-write and even sometimes draft documents. Someone who is professional, co-operative, discreet, and attentive to details. We also want someone who is willing to make a minimum commitment of one year.

What are the requirements needed for the right candidate?
The candidate will have a university degree in a field such as English, Literature, Communication, Education, etc. and be a native English speaker with flawless grammar and superior written communication skills. Basic knowledge of Windows, Windows NT and Internet tools are required. We do not require any Japanese language ability. However, the candidate must be able to read katakanaor be willing to learn to use the computers, which are equipped with Windows in Japanese. Experience in the oil business or in a business environment is definitely a plus. Knowledge of technical terms related to geophysics, geology and petroleum engineering (drilling) is helpful. The candidate must be available for training in March, and to start duties in April.

If you can, please tell us about benefits, salary, etc.
This position is on a part-time basis. There is work to be done every day and the employee is required to report to the office for four hours every day from Mon-Fri. Starting salary is from JY2400 per hour, depending on experience and abilities. Overtime is paid when the daily four hours is exceeded. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays are off. There are no benefits for the first year of contract, however they will be negotiated with the individual if a second year is contracted. Transportation is also paid.

Contact Information
Please send resume and cover letter (in English only) by fax to 03-5573-6860, attentioned to Mr Kamobayashi. Only selected candidates will be contacted. Training (full pay) to start immediately, full duties start on Apr 2.
