Hiromi Matsumaru,
President of Shou Nail Beauty Salon, talks to Maki Nibayashi about opportunities in the beauty industry.
Please tell us a bit about
your company.
Shou Nail Beauty Salon opened last March. We offer facials, manicures, eyelash perms,
pedicures, waxing, tinting and body massages. Our manicurist received her license from
California. Our Aesthetician received her license from New York and has experience working
in a salon in New York City as well. Our salon is located on a quiet street right behind
Omotesando, so it is convenient for most people to stop by after work or at the weekend.
For manicures, we give our clients a choice of over 500 different colors that they can
choose from and offer everything from acrylic nails to cuticle care in just a short period
of time. In addition we also do waxing - everything from lips, brows, forehead, back,
chest, full and half arms, full and half legs to underarms and bikini lines. Because all
of our specialists are bilingual we are well-equipped to cater to non-Japanese clients and
they are mostly people who work at embassies, foreign companies and banks.
What kind of people are you looking to hire?
Right now we are seeking aestheticians and masseurs. The aestheticians should have
professional knowledge about skincare and be able to counsel and consult with the client.
They should be someone who can use any skincare products for a facial and give sound
advice about facial care. We will be checking on the applicant' techniques when we
interview them. We do ask that only people who have graduated from a beauty school apply
so that we can be sure that the person has the right background knowledge. Also, someone
who can wax quickly but accurately and if they can do massages, that would be an added
plus. For the position of masseur, anyone with knowledge in the following areas is highly
desired: Shiatsu (acupuncture), Swedish massage, Craniosacral Balancing and Energy
Balancing. Someone who can train others would be a bonus and again, we will be checking
the applicant's technique at the time of the interview.
What kind of salary are you offering?
For the aesthetician's position the applicant will start on a part-time basis, and the
hourly rate will be from about JY800 per hour, but it's negotiable depending on their
abilities. Also, if the applicant already has a clientele list and brings their clients to
Shou Salon, they will get 40 percent commission from our menu price. For masseurs, pay is
from JY900 per hour, but this may vary according to experience and technique. Again, 40
percent commission is available if they bring with them their own clientele. The full-time
position depends on the person's experience and willingness to live in Japan for at least
a year.
