Mitsubishi has redesigned its popular Pajero SUV, which has sold some 2.5 million units in more than 170 countries since 1982. The fourth-generation Pajero underwent a full range of testing programs subjecting it to the harshest conditions imaginable, including at 2,500m atop the European Alps and minus 40oc temperatures in Northern Europe, as well as off-road driving in conditions resembling the African desert and the Australian Outback. New technologies include upgraded traction control, a weight-reducing aluminum hood, stiffer body joins and use of more plated steel sheet for improved durability and reliability. A new sound system and well-appointed interior have also been added to the new Pajero models, which sell from ¥2.4-¥4.3 million.
Speaking of redesigns, Toyota has a new-look Corolla sedan—now known as the Corolla Axio—and a new version of the small station wagon known as the Corolla Fielder. The Axio, which is the 10th generation of the venerable Corolla sedan, and the Fielder, feature a rearview video monitor and one-touch double-folding rear seats. Both cars have a newly developed 1.8-liter engine and Super CVT-i (Super Continuously Variable Transmission-intelligent) transmission that enhance cruising and environmental performance, as well as a “Pre-crash Safety System” that employs radar and an “Intelligent Parking Assist” system.
