Sneaker brand K-Swiss revs up its K-Sounds series again, with the latest installment slated for Mado Lounge high atop Roppongi Hills. The party launched at Air in 2006 and has hosted luminaries like Peter Hook from New Order and his nostalgia-laced “Hacienda Nights,” which looks at the sounds of the legendary Manchester club. It has also taken the form of a K-Sounds stage at Summer Sonic that last year welcomed, among others, sampler extraordinaire DJ Shadow.
The event makes its return as the kick-off party for the new and improved Mado Lounge. Perched on the 52nd floor of Roppongi Hills, Tokyo’s swankiest party space not only affords the best views in town, it’s now also been expanded into one of the city’s largest entertainment rooms, able to hold over 1,000 glitterati—including you.
K-Sounds’ special overseas guest for the evening comes in the form of DJ Anthony Pappa. One of Australia’s leading contributions to house music, Pappa cut his teeth spinning in Melbourne before touring Oz on the backs of a DMC mixing competition win at age 15. Relocating to London, Pappa has steadily worked his way up the clubland food chain with sets that sit on the funky side of tech-house. He’s also been tapped for a solid series of remixes, including a Top 20 hit for his remix of Chicane’s “Offshore,” as well as for mix compilations by prestige imprints including Global Underground and Renaissance.
The second special guest comes in the form of one of Japan’s most famous actors, who for the purposes of this article is to remain unnamed. A few hints: he was born in Yokohama in 1973 and is known not only for his acting, but also for his clothing designs, his early noise/hardcore and, more recently, his electro-flavored musical efforts.
Rounding out what is sure to be one of Golden Week’s most decadent evenings is InterFM DJ, TV tarento and sometime Cornelius lyricist DJ Bryan Burton-Lewis, notorious for, among other things, his uproarious trance and electro-tinged after-hours sets at a string of Roppongi nightclubs. Bryan, as it so happens, has also worked with the above actor in the band Safari. Got it yet?
K-Sounds@Mado Lounge, May 2. See club listings for details.
This year’s Royal Tone Luxury Party is set to outdo the 2007 event, with over 1,500 revelers expected to arrive at the sprawling party rooms of the new Mado Lounge on the 52nd floor of Roppongi Hills. This year’s performers are headlined by DJ Kaori, Japan’s top female turntablist. Also to be featured are fashion shows by Victoria Webb and the LA-based Bohemian Society, salsa dancers, a “tower” of candy and cupcakes, celebrities and some serious VIPs. The first 500 women through the door will receive a party bag, which includes such goodies as perfumes, a travel set from Bandai, moisturizers from Victoria’s Secret and more. Dress code is “sexy smart,” and you’ll definitely want to look your best—Fashion TV will be filming the event for broadcast on its global network.
