Returning to Air in an encore of his packed set last fall is Lars Sandberg, better known by his venerable alias Funk D’Void (taken from a P-Funk lyric).
Since catching the dance music bug during the UK’s late-’80s acid house explosion, the Glasgow native has been one of the stalwarts of the international DJ circuit. Honing his style in a seven-year stint as buyer for Fopp Records, Sandberg began his production work with Soma Records in the ’90s.
Influenced by Detroit techno and European electro, he made his first mark with the seminal track “Jack me Off.” Sandberg’s first full-length came in the form of 1997’s mesmerizing Technoir, which is now a certifiable techno classic. Since moving to Barcelona at the dawn of the decade, he’s brightened up the dark soundscapes of his previous work with a sunnier approach, most recently heard on his 2004 hit Volume Freak.
Backing Sandberg at Air among others is local turntablist Loud-One. Launching his career at the end of the ’90s in Osaka, the DJ moved to Tokyo, where he certified his techno credentials in the form of residencies at Luners (now Warehouse) and the much-mourned Aoyama beat temple Maniac Love, spinning alongside the likes of Jeff Mills…
An upcoming set by Mazi, a.k.a. Audio Soul Project, at Module provides the chance to catch an overseas artist at one of Tokyo’s most intimate venues.
A well-traveled DJ, prolific producer and owner of the labels Gourmet and Simple Soul Recordings, Mazi travels the world from his base in Chicago. Recording as Mazi, Audio Soul Project and a number of other monikers, he’s left his mark with house productions on key imprints like 20/20 Vision and Guidance so deep they suck you under. His “journey” style DJ sets have also won him a growing rep on dancefloors worldwide, recently taking him to Paris, London, New York and Istanbul, among others.
Mazi is joined by DJs including Yasu of the Microsurf crew in the ninth installment of Affordance & Hothouse Tokyo’s Casero series.
