Oriental express
This summer, all things Asian are hot stuff. Martin Webb
finds out how to get the look without breaking the bank.
The big labels are pushing Far Eastern looks hard this season,
as kimono tops, cheongsam and silky bomber jackets were seen
on the runways of Dior and Prada, while Gucci's ultra-controversial
ad campaign features a silken kimono top. But those who call
the region home can avoid paying designer prices; the real
things abound in Tokyo for a fraction of the cost.
Silken souvenir jackets
Vintage souvenir jackets from GIs who were based in Japan
or Korea after the Second World War have long been highly
prized collectors items here in Tokyo. This season, updated
versions and vintage copies are everywhere, cunningly combining
the catwalks' military and Oriental trends. Trendsetting
heartthrob Justin Timberlake wore one on stage for his recent
Tokyo mini-tour and Brad Pitt has been spotted sporting a
mean-looking dragon version.

to vintage emporium Santa Monica, where prices start at ¥75,000.
Ladies looking for a more affordable alternative might want
to follow the lead of pop idols Britney Spears, Christina
Aguilera and Pink, who have all been seen wearing satin bombers
from LA brand Orient Express. These delicately embroidered
jackets are replicas of USAF originals men's (¥29,800)
and ladies' (¥19,800). A good budget alternative
for guys is available at Comme Ca spin-off Artisan, where
reversible satin numbers featuring ukiyoe-inspired embroidery
are priced at (¥33,000). For a more lightweight take,
pick up a slinky embroidered T-shirt (¥6,000) from Aoyama
basement boutique Hi-Fidelity.

Continuing the relaxed bohemian mood of winter's belted
cardigans, robe-like kimono gowns are a wardrobe essential
this season. Green and pink are the key colors for this flattering
item, which can be worn as a light jacket on crisp spring
evenings or paired with a tank top and jeans or an A-line
skirt. Try getting into the hanami spirit with a blossom-printed
slinky silk or satin number like this vintage juban with sakura,
ume, Fuji, and botan floral motifs (¥3,900 from Chicago).

Getting dressed up in a kimono is great fun and can offer
a fascinating insight into the mindset of Japanese women of
ages past. While department stores all have a wide selection
of kimono-silhouetted blouses, cheongsam and frog closure
shirts, a trip to a Japanese vintage store can yield some
great finds like obi-style belts, kimono fabric scarves and
fan accessories. As a souvenir, gift, home decoration or fashion
item, Japan's wearable heritage is available at one
of these stores.
