Occupation:
Freelance Hair and Makeup Artist
Time in Japan:
Four months
Where are you from? Melbourne, Australia.
What do you do here? I divide my time pretty evenly between Sin Den Hair and Make Salon and work at a
photography studio, doing freelance hair and makeup for various magazines, fashion shows,
etcetera. And some occasional modeling.
What brought you to Japan? I wanted to freak myself out completely and Japan sounded as good a place as any to
start, seeing as I knew nothing much about it. I walked into a travel agent, shut my eyes
and pointed to a date on the calendar. I went home and packed up, then landed here.
What' the difference between the beauty business in Tokyo and Australia? There is a lot more of it to begin with. People embrace it, and both boys and girls
follow trends and looks sooner, adapting it to their taste faster. It's not just a special
occasion thing; people here do a "look" just to meet friends or go out shopping.
Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be? Edgar Winter was my idol. He just did a thing to me! When he was touring here I
happened to book his concert. So I put together a band and opened up for him.
Do you sing in the shower? No, I don't, but I sing in the bathroom. I create my best songs there! You'd be
surprised the places where ideas come to you.
What do you most like about Japan? The spirituality is a more peaceful one. I've become more responsive to myself and my
spiritual side. I have time to breathe, and to hear myself breathe.
Do you find anything frustrating about working here? Everything! Like when my friend and I were building this studio, purchasing everything
took two weeks: the flooring, the curtains, the air conditioner. Two weeks! That was
frustrating because I had a schedule I was trying to stay on. So I tried to say to myself
"Well, hey, wipe out what you knew before you got here and just slowly, calmly
adjust." That worked for about a day and a half.
Where do you think you'll be in the year 2000? I see a very bright future, definitely. I think in the year 2000 it will be "only
the strong survive," and I like that. I like the challenges. I see the school
expanding, not only one place, but two or three. I definitely see the record label going
strong. The year 2000 is going to be very good for Sonic Jett Production.
